How will Custom Home Building change over the next 10 years?

New homes built today provide more value and consume less energy. The next 10 years could be a period of rapid evolution.
Foam insulation, no-VOC paints, radiant heat, hi-efficiency HVAC systems are already de rigueur. LED lighting is an item expected to decrease in price over the next few years. As lighting makes up at least 10% of a home's total electricity use, the use of LED bulbs could cut lighting bills by 80%.
Are homes getting smaller?
In the second quarter of 2007, the average single family home was 2507 square feet. At the same point in 2009, it fell to 2392. Does this apply to custom homes and will it last?
Anecdotal evidence points to yes. There has been a mind-set change, as people think more about quality than quantity. There may be a permanent shift to a more efficient, smarter and smaller home.
Outdoor living spaces increase in popularity.
This includes covered areas with built-in grills, sinks and beverage centers. Screen porches have never lost popularity in this region, and now are outfitted with phone and TV jacks, ceiling fans, quartz heaters and fireplaces. Patios, courtyards, water elements make the "backyard" a desirable place to relax and entertain.
Change can be exciting!
